What is a "Hosts" File?

When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser,

the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address listed in the "Hosts" file

(the computer uses "numbers" to identify a Website not names).

If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open.

If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the number before it can "call" that site.

By placing "Bogus" information in the "hosts" file a "Trojan"

(sometimes controlled remotely)

can disrupt, alter and/or down right CONTROL which websites you can or cannot visit.

"HOSTS" File HIJACKED !!

COMMENTARY
Continued from Page 1

This first video is very basic and helps you to understand how to navigate to the "hosts" file.
It also will help you understand the videos that follow it which move much faster and are somewhat more technical.

Enter the need for "Manual Intervention".
Here are several videos that highlight different methods of attacking the problem:

How to manipulate the hosts file
(Very Basic)

You will probably get an error message when you try to "save" your "hosts" file in Notepad using this method if you are using "VISTA" so we also include a "Vista Friendly" video.

How to edit the host file in Vista

The "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" selection is so very important to get because it eliminates the ERROR message you would get if you did not use it.

Also putting the "BLOCK" on "Adobe" was only an "EXAMPLE" you don't have to run out and put a block on Adobe related sites or anything like that.

Malware Blocks Security Programs - Fix it

If you don't fix or repair PC's and Laptops you probably don't need to download the "HostsMan" or "HostsExpert" but they may come in handy at some time in the future so it's up to you.

As I stated earlier, I highly recommend:

1. MalwareBytes (Anti-Malware)
2. Avast (Antivirus)
3. WinPatrol (Intrusion Detection S/W)

All of which are highly recommended by most "REAL" Techs, online and in the trenches fighting "REAL" Malware "IN THE WILD" everyday.

Spyware - Hijacking the host file

With regards to "TOOLS" (his first point) he is right NO TOOL HAS IT ALL so why would you use a so-called "Antivirus Program" (TOOL) that REFUSES TO BE IN THE TOOL BOX WITH ANY OTHER TOOL?
